Smile! 5 Ways To Kick off Summer
Posted July 02, 2018 in Uncategorized
It’s officially summertime! Before you start running outside, prepare yourself with these 5 helpful ways to kick off summer.
1. Pack The BEST Snack
Skip the chips when packing your snack this summer! By picking a more refreshing and healthy option such as apples or vegetables, you are protecting your gums and keeping your smile clean. Chips can easily be wedged in between your teeth to cause damage to your gums by collecting cavity-causing bacteria. On the other hand, fibrous fruit and vegetables work like a natural toothbrush by scrubbing off build-up from your smile. Choose the fresh and natural option and your smile will thank you!
2. Get Cheesy!
Backyard bar-b-ques are a summer staple. Nothing is better than a freshly grilled burger by the pool or under the shade. Don’t forget to add cheese to your burger because not only is it tasty, but it also helps your smile. Cheese is full of calcium which can help strengthen the enamel on your teeth. Research by the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that eating more dairy can reduce the chance of developing gum disease. Next time you think of having a burger without cheese, think of all the benefits and added flavor that it can attribute!
3. Don’t Go In The Water
The summer heat will have you diving into the closest body of water just to stay cool. If you find yourself frequenting the local pool more than 6-8 hours weekly, you should be aware of “swimmers calculus.” This effect will cause swimmers to experience dental yellowing and erosion on the front teeth according to the ADA. It is said to be caused by poorly managed pools with a low pH balance that is higher than that of saliva. Luckily, if you notice the effect of swimmer calculus, a trip to the dentist can remove the stains and restore your smiles luster. Swimmers should make sure to visit the dentist this summer to ensure that their smile is being properly protected from the pool’s chemicals.
4. Hydrate And Detox At The Same Time
Very few beverages have as many uses as infused water. Your summer centerpiece will be replaced this year by a pitcher of water infused with your favorite fruits. The splash of color not only looks Instagram worthy, it also is healthier than most beverages. You will forget about sugar-filled soda and energy drinks once you find the perfect balance of fruit and water. Try making your own infused water by adding cucumber and mint to your water and let it sit overnight. Switching to this refreshing option is beneficial to your smile since it will not damage your teeth as soda does.
5. Fresh And Clean Smile
Pop in a piece of sugar-free gum with xylitol for a fresh and clean smile this summer! Blowing bubbles is not the only thing chewing gum is good for. Chewing gum with xylitol helps remove bacteria from your mouth and is a sweet alternative to sugar-filled gum.
